Report of Expert Round Table on Dutch aid context

22/05/2013Two months ago, an expert round table on the Dutch aid context took place at the Nutshuis in The Hague. Coordinator of the Hivos Knowledge Programme, Josine Stremmelaar, took part in this expert meeting. The aim of the round table was to better understand the developments that led to the recent changes in the Dutch financial and socio-political commitment to development cooperation and to discuss the challenges and opportunities that were identified in the extensive analysis ‘The Dutch and de... › read more...

Hivos is changing course

08/05/2013Persistent global problems such as growing social inequality,  corrupt, incompetent governments and energy scarcity in poor and  emerging countries demand a new approach. Hivos therefore feels that now  more than ever is the time for innovative solutions to achieve social  change. We plan to do this hand in hand with civil society, universities  and companies. One of the consequences of this new direction, announced  by Hivos yesterday at the symposium 'Developme... › read more...

› read more...

‘Leftist hobbies’ under attack. How to consort populism?

Supporting populations of remote, poor countries is increasingly seen as a neglect of 'our own people'. The arts are perceived as a 'left-wing hobby'; the costly recreation of misguided idealists. And caring for the environment? This is no longer seen as self-evident, but as open for re-interpretation. Dutch essayist Bas Heijne has written a new Think Piece for the Future Calling programme, in which he argues that the domains of development aid, arts, culture and the environment, togethe... › read more...

NGOs North-South: discovering the future

It buzzes in Development Land. More and more we speak about the need to revisit strategies, objectives and relationships, in order to find an answer to the changes within the broad field of development. Globally we witness the emergence of new actors, changes in poverty patterns, demographic growth and climate change. At home we witness growing scepticism on development cooperation, resulting in a decreasing development budget, while Southern NGOs see an increase in direct funding by bilatera... › read more...

International cooperation in a multipolar world: the role of emerging powers.

What does international cooperation look like in a multipolar world? What is the role played by emerging powers? This is the subject of a recent policy paper published by the Society for International Development (SID).This policy paper looks into the challenges and opportunities for traditional donors, like the Netherlands, that arise from the role of emerging powers in the developing world. It argues that most of these challenges and opportunities are the result of different approaches to d... › read more...
