André Hielkema MA (1958) is a cultural historian.Since 1986 he is Secretary of the Socrates Foundation, which creates (and attends to) special chairs at Dutch universities about burning social issues (in the fields of life sciences, technological progress, environment and sustainability etc.) with which modern humanism has to deal. Nowadays almost all Dutch universities have such a special humanist chair founded by the Socrates Foundation.
Between 1980 and 1983 he was editor of the Dutch gay scientific quarterly Homologie. Between 1986 and 2008 he was editor of two scientific quarterlies of the Dutch humanist movement, Rekenschap (Account) (1986-2000) and Journal for Humanistics (2000-2008).
He is also a Staff Member of the Dutch Humanist Alliance since this Alliance started in 2001. The Humanist Alliance is the umbrella organisation of fifty Dutch humanist institutions, including Hivos. The Humanist Alliance is at the centre of the Dutch humanist movement.
He is the editor of an authoritative book in the Netherlands about the dandy and dandyism: De dandy of de overschrijding van het alledaagse. Facetten van het dandyisme, Meppel / Amsterdam, Boom, 1989, 206 p. He also edited a book about socio-cultural aspects of the European integration: Welzijn zonder grenzen. Sociaal-culturele aspecten van de Europese integratie, Meppel / Amsterdam, Boom, 1990,108 p. Together with G. van Dijk MA he edited a book about humanity and civilization after the year 2000: De menselijke maat. Humaniteit en beschaving na 2000, Amsterdam, De Arbeiderspers, 1999, 212 p.
Together with I. Dubel MA he edited the shorter Dutch edition of this book, Urgency Required: Urgentie geboden. Homo- en lesborechten zijn mensenrechten, Amsterdam, SWP, 2008, 208 p.
