The knowledge programme Small Producer Agency in the Globalized Market made the first steps in the formation of its South-based Learning Netwok and the participatory design of its focal themes. Bill Vorley, the IIED chair of our programme, was interviewed by the El Comercio on August in Lima.
IIED (London), Mainunby (La Paz) and Hivos organized two round table discussions, in Lima and Managua, with potential partners from Central and South America. One objective that appeared to emerge was, for instance, that focal themes should be of direct interest for small producer organizations, but also a common theme for the very many of them. This then assures a rich debate between the organizations, but also relevance for the global debate. One question could for instance be: niche markets, friends or foes?, or small producers meet big business: how to analyze risk and opportunity? Other issues discussed were ways to recruit the network members and to assure impact.
The team of IIED, Hivos and Mainumby was also honored by the great meeting with CEPES in Lima and a very interesting visit to the whole of the co-operative coffee chain in Peru, from the coffee shrubs and the local producers, to the big warehouses of COCLA in Quillabamba heading to the Junta Nacional de Café in Lima.
