The Hivos-ISS Knowledge Programme on Civil Society Building focuses on a number of thematic priorites. Focus areas are social movements in Central America and responsive government in Southern Africa. In these regions, clusters of research projects provide input to the Knowledge Programme. Besides these focus areas a number of smaller projects are being developed in other parts of the worls with a specific focus, such as LGBT and indigenous movements in the Andes, post-conflict participation in Uganda or alliances and cooperation btween social movements in different parts of the world.

What are the dynamics of the Peruvian LGBT movement and what has been the influence of national and international actors in its functioning? This is the main question that Marten van den Berge, hosted by the Programme for Democracy and Global Transformation (PDGT) in Lima, will explore in the next 9 months.

Indigenous people in the Andes

17/07/2008 With a changing political, social and economic context, the relations between indigenous people and international organisations becomes more and more complex. This asks for a better understanding of how to engage in cooperation.

Civic action for responsive governance

Hivos supports research to get a better understanding of how civil society organisations can perform better in their role of watch dog towards the state, specifically in order to increase responsive governance and human rights accountability. This line of the Knowledge Programme specifically addresses Southern Africa, including Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Social movements in Central America

17/07/2008 Hivos has a major interest in the emergence and impact of major social movements in Central America, in particular the anti-free trade movement, the women's movement and the indigenous movement. This line of the Knowledge Programme is one of the two main components, and emphasises the exchange of lessons learned within and between social movements in the region.

Participation in post-conflict settings

In cooperation with the organisation ICCO, Hivos support a PhD research that focused on the effects of violent conflict on civic participation at local level. The research aims to contribute to an understanding of the role of different social actors in enhancing civic engagement in local governance in post-conflict settings. Social movements baseline study

17/07/2008 Hivos has initiated a baseline study into the currect state of cooperation and alliances between major social movements, such as the women's movements, indigenous people, LGBT, HRs movement or people with HIV/Aids.
