Civil Society Building continues to figure prominently in the development policy realm and so too does its northern bias, especially with regard to processes in Africa. Through the MA-research facility, the Hivos/ISS Civil Society Knowledge programme enables researchers and civil society organizations from the South to develop and share their views on key issues in the Civil Society Debate.

This year, 5 seasoned activists and NGO practitioners, currently studying at the ISS, are conducting field research in their home countries on issues such as community based structures and the aid chain in Ethiopia, social movement dynamics in Indonesia, NGO sustainabilty in Kenya and sexuality and agency in Nicaragua. On this site, you will find profiles of the researchers, their projects and regular blogs that report on their research process as it unfolds. The research results will be available in November this year. You can also check out the publications of previous research project on our publications page
