Large-scale mining and oil extraction by transnational companies have expanded enormously under the current neo-liberal government in Peru. Many of these extraction projects have had a negative impact on local communities and the environment and have generated social, economical and political conflicts.

In this seminar we will debate some of the current practices of multinational mining and oil corporations in Peru. We will analyze the consequences and discuss several local alternatives and what we can do to support them. Our special guest will be Magdiel Carrion, who will be in the Netherlands in regard of the international campaign 'No-Go Zones for Mining', organised by Belgian NGO CATAPA, Network Muqui, and the Front for the Sustainable Development of the Northern Border of Peru (FDSFNP).

Mr. Carrion is a peasent leader from the 'Federacion Provincial de Comunidades Campesinas de Ayabaca' and the new president of the 'Confederacion Nacional de Comunidades Afectados por la Mineria del Peru' (CONACAMI). Magdiel has a large history in the communal fight against mining projects (like Monterrico Metal) in the area of Rio Blanco/Majaz and has been directly confronted with criminalization of social protest and violations of human rights in Peru. In the attachment you find the campaign brochure (in Spanish), or check this website for more information: www.mineriaenelparaiso.org.

This seminar is organised by Hivos-ISS Civil Society Knowledge Programme, the 'Conflict and Cooperation over Natural Resources in Developing Countries' programme and Staffgroup 1.
