Women's Movement movie screening in Utrecht
Tags: Nicaragua , Civil Society Building
On May 15th 2010 the Utrecht-Leon City Association has organised a Nicaraguan movie night. The event is screening seven short movies about Nicaragua, made by Nicaraguans. One of the movies is produced by our Knowledge Programme partners Cinco and Movimiento Autonomo de Mujeres in Nicaragua: "The Struggle of the Women's Rights Movement in Nicaragua 1998-2008". The 20-minute movie shows the history of the Nicaraguan women's movement, its strategies, a few of its successes and their continuing struggle for women's rights. The movie is one of the outputs of the ISS/Hivos Knowledge Programme and is currently used by the women's movement in Nicaragua for educational purposes at forums, debates and informal gatherings.
What are 'city-associations'?
Since the 1980s more than 70 percent of the Dutch municipalities have established 'formal friendships' or associations with foreign municipalities. The main objective of Dutch municipalities with partners in the Global South is development cooperation, while 'cultural exchange' plays an important role. The funding usually depends on the size of the Dutch city and it supports existing projects education, health, culture and more. Utrecht and Leon have an official 'friendship' since 1985.
