LIMA, Peru – From 26 May until 28 May 2010 the ‘Encuentro de Saberes y Movimientos: Entre las Crisis y los Otros Mundos Posibles’ (ed.: “Meeting of Knowledges and Movements: between crisis and other possible worlds”) takes place in Lima, Peru. On these days national and international representatives of social movements, researchers, artists and development practitioners will take part in a critical dialogue over what role knowledge and social movements play in creating new opportunities for social change in times of political, economic and ecological crisis.
A wide range of activities will take place, like roundtables, workshops, public debates, street march, cultural performances and more. Later, from 31 May till 2 June, social movements leaders and members from across Latin America are meeting in the desert outside of Lima to take part in a workshop.
The Civil Society Building Knowledge Programme is supporting this initiative by “Programma Democracia y Transformacion Global” (PDTG). PDTG is meant to promote collaboration between researchers, practitioners and social leaders on themes of democracy, justice, globalization and socio-political change.
The Knowledge Programme participates at the conference and is represented by five team members. Juan Tiney from Guatemala will take part in a roundtable on social movements, Marten van de Berge will present findings of our research on the LGBT movement in Peru and Kees Biekart will lead a debate on our Knowledge Programme and social movements. In the mean time Marlieke will report on-site. In December 2010 PDGT will publish a full report.
