In South East Asia, the Knowledge Programme on Promoting Pluralism focuses on the state of pluralism in Indonesia. With a population of over 215 million, of whom 86% is Muslim, Indonesia is the country with the largest majority Muslim population in the world. About 9% of the population is Christian and the remaining 5% belongs to the Hindu, Buddhist or other religious groups. Historically, tension existed between the religious groups and pluralism is a heavily debated issue in present-day Indonesia. The Knowledge Programme on Promoting Pluralism will focus on religious pluralism and emphasise the day-to-day practices of different religious groups living in one country.

Pluralism is a heavily debated issue in present-day Indonesia.In the past few years, the media has increasingly reported about different positions in the debates, in response to the growth of religious and social conflicts in the country. Both those who are in favour and those who are against fundamentalist forms of religion have frequently expressed their views.
