This dialogue will be an occasion to bring together African networks involved in research and advocacy on African based network looking at the impact of the systemic crises on African development. The launch/dialogue will invite participants to reflect on the performance of Southern and East African economies in relation to the current multiple crises (financial, food, fuel, care). It will ask participants to look at the way the crises are playing out in Africa, specifically at the socio-economic impact on both the macro and micro levels.

It will highlight the work of the Devlopment journal beyond economics and building on the launches in New York and The Hague as well as take the opportunity to strengthen links and build on the work of the SID East Africa Regional Office on inequalities; the research on alternatives of the African Research and Reform Foundation (ARRF) and Nyerere Foundation work and specifically the conference on ‘Obama - any impact for Africa?’; the ongoing reporting on African perspectives on the crisis by the IPS African Regional Office; and the discussions raised by the Africa Development Bank on alternative African responses to the global financial crisis (November 2009), as well as highlighting the work of SID scenarios in the region and HIVOS partners involved in the project Twaweza, a citizen-centred approach to development and public accountability in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda among others.
