A changed Reflection After Summer School
Knowledge discovery, Adventure, surprises and Fun is what I would say characterise the summer school. Meeting and interacting with people from different countries and cultures, and the never ending questions to know more about each other in quite amazing and enriching, and each day that passes by, one more thing is learnt as you interact
To me the summer school has been a period of reflection. Reflecting on human identity, nature, and trying to rethink man’s impact on nature, which at the end has left man with more questions that he can provide answers. One point of refrence is from one of the lectures by Prof. Henk who gave a quatation that’’ while man’s days on earth are limited, nature is permanent”
.I came to reflect on how many people have done their best only to die and live the world at least not changed to their expectations
Turning to other crazy discoveries, I have come to understand how pluralistic the world is. Not only economically, socially and politically but also a plurality of challenges. To prove nature’s superiority over man, each country and its people are unique and faced with a diversity of issues and challenges somewhat particular to each. For example, while Uganda is grapling with ethinic tensions, India may be more confused with problems of caste, religion and ethinic diversity. For the Indonesians whom I thought are better placed than my mother country despite being branded ‘’less developed ‘’are tied up in religious conflicts. Even my collegues from Europe, a country I would imagine should be free from conflicts has its share of the cake. Not only faced with an identity and racial discrimination but also nature has proved that it can be tamed only to a certain extent
As I come towards the end of the summer school, I am left wondering how crazy the world can be. With people asking more questions that they can provide answers. I come to conclude that there may a stronger power that keeps us going. Only if man could realise that engaging with each other would be the only option to find a few solutions to our challenges
What a great experience I have had, especially the free interaction with our coordinators, who make even the most reserved person to open up! Building every one’s confidence to rethink pluralism, identity and development. Above all the execurtion to Wonosobo, that has been my turning point to rethink Uganda’s development. Only if I could wake up one day to find my own village like one of the beatiful villages high up in the mountains of Wonosobo!
I end by applauding the organizers of the summer school, whose efforts have created a new reflection in my life. Hoping that what I have learnt does not end with story telling about my visit to Indonesia but is replicated back in my own country.
