Over the last nine years, the Development Research Centre on Citizenship, Participation and Accountability at the University of Sussex has carried grassroots, empirical research on how citizens mobilise to exercise their voice and claim their rights.In this seminar, the centre’s director, Professor John Gaventa, will share some findings from this extensive body of work, focusing ways in which power relations shape the possibilities for participation and how citizens mobilise across local to global levels. In particular, he will draw on recent work on how citizen mobilisation contributes to national policy change, as well as the challenges of constructing citizen action across local to global spaces for engagement.
